Umesh Chauhan, 35, was filming Tiger Shroff leaving a football ground in Mumbai’s Juhu on Sunday, October 18, when he was hit by a bullet. In his vlog, he excitedly showed the actor waving to fans, stopping for a photograph and getting into his BMW, according to the 48-second clip accessed by NDTV.
But as Shroff’s car exited the ground at Pushpa Park at around 7 pm, gunmen opened fire. A bullet struck Chauhan, who was recording beside the car, in the chest. Shroff’s driver was also shot, in the left hand. The actor, seated in the front passenger seat, escaped without a gunshot wound; he had minor abrasions and was discharged from hospital, The Indian Express reported.
Chauhan told NDTV the shots sounded like a tyre bursting, and that he then felt an intense pain in his chest and thought he was having a heart attack. “I started shouting, pleading with everyone for help - saying that I had pain in my chest, telling them I couldn’t breathe,” he said. “I didn’t know I had been shot; I only discovered that after I reached Cooper Hospital.”
Chauhan has sold detergent door-to-door in Mumbai for about 18 years to support his family. For the past 18 months, he had also been filming Bollywood celebrities, their homes and the fans who gather outside them, hoping to grow his online audience, The Indian Express reported. NDTV described him as a devoted fan of Shroff who would go to Pushpa Park every Sunday to see him. That evening he had gone there with a friend, fellow vlogger Kisan Rajbhar.
He was moved from Cooper Hospital to KEM Hospital in Parel, where doctors said the bullet had injured his liver but his heart and lungs were safe. He remains under close observation, and doctors have tentatively planned to remove the bullet on Wednesday if he is fit for anaesthesia, The Times of India reported. Shroff’s mother, Ayesha Shroff, visited him at KEM on Tuesday and assured him of financial help, the paper said. Chauhan said the actor had also wished him a speedy recovery.
Police have so far arrested at least seven people in the case. Three men accused of being the shooters were held in Kota, Rajasthan, on Monday, and on Tuesday the Delhi Police Special Cell arrested four more, including two women, who allegedly helped get the pistol to Mumbai. None of the allegations has been tested in court.
