A fire at Oil India Limited's Intermediate Tank Farm in Tengakhat, in Assam's Dibrugarh district, killed one worker and injured six others on Friday (6 November), the company said. The blaze broke out around 9.05 am during maintenance work.
The worker who died has been identified as Raju Dutta. He and the six injured were employees of Spectron Engineers Private Limited, a Mumbai-based contractor engaged by Oil India, the company said in a statement carried by PTI.
The injured were taken to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh and to the OIL Hospital. Oil India said its fire service teams were mobilised at once and that the blaze has been brought under control. The company also expressed condolences to Dutta's family.
Early local reports had spoken of workers being seriously hurt and of one person missing after an explosion at the facility; the company's later statement confirmed one death and six burn injuries. Further details on the exact cause were still awaited on Friday afternoon.
Oil India's main producing fields in Upper Assam are centred around Duliajan, with associated tank farms and pipeline infrastructure across Dibrugarh district. Friday's fire is a separate industrial accident at the Tengakhat intermediate facility, not at the Duliajan fields headquarters.
