Nishad Kumar has turned two days at the Asian Para Games into a double-gold campaign. The Indian athlete cleared 2.04 metres to win the men’s high jump T47 in Aichi-Nagoya on Tuesday, October 20, setting a Games record a day after taking the long jump title.
The two victories came in different disciplines: Monday’s long jump gold required a best leap of 7.11 metres; Tuesday’s success came over the high-jump bar. Nishad is already a two-time Paralympic silver medallist, but his latest continental campaign has added a second event to his gold-medal haul.
His long jump appearance was a debut in that event at these Games. In a statement issued on Monday night, the Prime Minister’s Office recognised the gold and highlighted Nishad’s versatility. The official message concerned the long jump result, before Tuesday’s high jump final added another title.
According to PTI’s report, Nishad is the third Indian to win two gold medals at a single edition of the Asian Para Games. Ankur Dhama and Sheetal Devi achieved that distinction in Hangzhou: Dhama in the 1500m and 5000m T11, and Sheetal in individual and mixed-team compound archery.
T47 is a classification for athletes with upper-limb impairments. For Nishad, the latest result combines a Games record in his established high-jump discipline with a winning performance in the long jump, rather than two medals from variations of the same event.
His second gold was part of a wider Indian athletics surge on Tuesday. By the end of the second competition day, India had 35 medals: nine gold, 11 silver and 15 bronze. Athletics had contributed 20 of those medals, including all five Indian golds won that day, PTI reported.
