The deaths of 19 people at Kolkata’s Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal have put crowd management and escape routes under scrutiny as the festival continues. Police have arrested seven people, including organisers, in connection with the crowd crush on the evening of October 17.
The Indian Express reported on October 19 that the pandal had one exit and narrow surrounding lanes. Police sources told the newspaper that organisers and police had not adequately reviewed security despite heavy crowds.
Those sources described visitors rushing for shelter in heavy rain as others turned back into the crowded space. The newspaper reported that dropped control ropes and announcements about a possible structural collapse added to panic. Responsibility has not been finally established.
The crush occurred around 7.40 pm on Saturday. Police opened a case involving culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The arrests do not establish the guilt of those accused.
Officials told The Indian Express that 25 people were injured, including two in intensive care. Police said investigators were examining CCTV, access routes, emergency exits and medical arrangements.
Fire authorities have increased pandal safety checks. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said a proposed wider inquiry would examine police and fire officials’ roles.
In the immediate aftermath, authorities asked several other major Kolkata pujas to stop admitting visitors temporarily, according to PTI reporting carried by NDTV on October 18. Adhikari urged organisers to provide adequate lighting and entry and exit gates. Nearly 3,500 Durga Pujas are being held across the city.
