New Zealand hit back in the India vs New Zealand 4th T20I at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday (30 October), piling up 259 for 7, their highest total in the format, and bowling India out of the chase to win by 87 runs. India made 172 for 9.

The win came too late to save the series. India, who won the first three matches, lead 3-1, and the fifth and final T20I is on Sunday in Hamilton. Our report on India’s series-clinching win in Wellington is linked in the sources below.

Glenn Phillips made 107 off 49 balls and was named player of the match. He and Michael Bracewell, who smashed 65 off 25 balls, put on a century stand and hit 16 sixes between them. India had a chance to break it when Naman Dhir dropped Bracewell in the 14th over.

“Yeah, it was fabulous. Obviously it was a really good pitch to bat on out there today, and I think we made the most of it, which was fantastic. And yeah, obviously nice to get a few and contribute to the lads,” Phillips told broadcasters after the match.

Phillips has now scored 276 runs in four innings in the series. He left the field during India’s chase, but said it was a precaution. “We’ve got a massive summer coming up ahead, and obviously I don’t necessarily do anything at less than 100%, and it just wasn’t worth the risk tonight,” he said.

India’s chase went wrong from the start. Jacob Duffy took the wickets of Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson in his first over and finished with four wickets. Abhishek Sharma and Shreyas Iyer added a fifty stand before Matt Fisher and Adam Milne struck, leaving India at 56 for 4.

Captain Mitchell Santner then took two wickets in his first over, including a caught-and-bowled to remove Axar Patel. Tilak Varma and Prince Yadav held up New Zealand with a 37-run stand, and India batted out their 20 overs as much of the crowd of 39,000 headed home.

Earlier, India had New Zealand in early trouble when Tim Seifert fell cheaply, and Daryl Mitchell made a quick 24 off nine balls before falling lbw. The teams now play the last T20I in Hamilton before the one-day series starts on Wednesday.
