Images and videos of a purported new ₹1,000 note have been doing the rounds on Instagram, X and Telegram, with some posts claiming it has already been issued or will be launched soon. On Tuesday (27 October), the government’s PIB Fact Check unit said the claim is fake.
What did PIB Fact Check say? “Several social media posts claim that a new ₹1,000 note has been issued. This claim is fake,” it said in a post on X. “The @RBI has made no announcement regarding the issuance of a new ₹1,000 note.” It asked people to verify information through official sources and not to share unverified claims.

What do the viral posts show? The purported note has a yellowish appearance and a temple motif, CNBC-TV18 reported. Some posts claimed it would come into circulation “on the 15th”. Others show people holding the yellow note, according to IANS.
Does India have a ₹1,000 note right now? No. The old ₹1,000 note stopped being legal tender with the demonetisation announced on 8 November 2016, along with the old ₹500 note. A redesigned ₹500 note was introduced afterwards, but the ₹1,000 denomination was never brought back.
Which notes are in circulation? Notes of ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹200 and ₹500 in the RBI’s Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series are in active circulation, IANS reported.
What about the ₹2,000 note? The RBI introduced it in November 2016 to meet the economy’s currency needs quickly after demonetisation, and stopped printing it in 2018-19. In May 2023, the RBI announced it was withdrawing ₹2,000 notes from circulation under its “Clean Note Policy”. Its press release said: “The banknotes in ₹2000 denomination will continue to be legal tender.”
How can you check such claims? Any new note or change to existing currency is announced officially by the RBI, as it did with the ₹2,000 withdrawal, so its press releases and notifications are the place to check.
