A 21-year-old man allegedly walked into a Class 10 classroom with an electric chainsaw and attacked a schoolgirl at a government school in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district on Saturday (31 October), police and reports said. A classmate who was nearby was also injured.
The attack took place in the morning while a mathematics lesson was under way. The girl suffered serious injuries, and her classmate was hurt on the leg. Both were rushed to the Government General Hospital in Anantapur.
Late in the evening, the seriously injured girl was shifted to a private hospital in Bengaluru for better treatment, accompanied by a medical team that included an anaesthetist and a surgeon, Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav said. Police told PTI that the other girl was stable.
The teacher in the class told The Hindu she was clearing students’ doubts when the man barged in. “All of it happened in two to three minutes. The attacker left the school before anyone could understand what happened.”
According to reports, school staff noticed the man on the premises but mistook him for a worker, as repair work was going on at the school.
Special police teams examined CCTV footage and arrested the man at Dharmavaram railway station hours later. Anantapur Rural Sub-Divisional Police Officer K Ashwin Manideep told PTI that the accused is allegedly a relative of one of the girls. “The girl is in hospital with her parents,” he said.
Police have registered a case that includes the charge of attempted murder. According to reports, the man had proposed to the girl and she had turned him down, and the rejection is suspected to be the motive. Police said the exact reason for the attack is yet to be ascertained. The allegations have not been tested in court.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said on X that he was personally tracking the girl’s recovery. “Attackers who target our young girls inside schools have no place in our society,” he wrote, adding that he had ordered the police to “hunt down the monster responsible and deliver the harshest legal punishment swiftly”.
The Indian Idiot is not naming the students, who are minors, or other details that could identify them.
