Dekho first things first, I had lost all hopes after The Witcher Season 2. It was stretched out, had sloppy writing, characters were out of place and everything felt like it had no purpose (?) But from eyes that have binged The Witcher Season 3 in one night, and the heart that was thoroughly moved by all the characters, I can say that they are onto something with this season.
Plot
This season picks up from Geralt of Rivia and Yennefer of Vengerberg coming together to save Princess Cirilla of Cintra. Come on, all of us have been rooting for them to make their khudki pyaari si family. The politics of this season is actually comendable, it’s the actual ‘never let them know your next move’ sort of story from every character’s perspective. You keep running around with the story chasing all the clues until the show decides to tell you. The chemistry between the leads is top notch, with no unnecessary sex scenes or show of skin. The writers and actors deliver the emotions as they need to be, in some places even better.
Performances
Can I just start with how I can never imagine anyone else other than Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia? Like dude just gives a look and you know what his next move will be. Just wanna request the makers here, PLEASE DON’T LET HIM GO!!! Anyway, Cavill par baad mein simp karunga, cuz major appreciation is due for the supporting cast. Joey Batey as Jaskier is such a goofball and cuttu, any scene with him means a sure shot delight. That only if you are not busy simping over how fckn beautiful Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg is. I know that she is the magic of the story, literally but yaar she is also the magic of the show, figuratively.
Screenplay and Cinematography
My favourite thing this season was that there were no long, stretchy fights with the monsters outside of what was needed in the story. Every fight scene had a purpose beyond delivering an action packed story. It was crisp and delivered the underlying message of that character’s story without making you feel like “acha haan theek hai, ab aage badho”. The meticulously choreographed battle sequences are a visual treat. You get Geralt’s swordplay prowess and Yennefer’s powerful magic, aur kya chahiye? The plot is smoother than butter on a hot pancake, and you’ll be glued to the screen, guaranteed!
Writing and Direction
This season had so much to give in terms of its writing, character arc, music and scene-to-scene perfection that 5 episodes for this volume, leaves you wanting for more. I am not someone who has read the books, so without much knowledge of the source material, I can say that this season might just be the best. They finally make you feel like, is story mei action hai, music hai, drama hai and bahut saari politics hai.
Game of Thromes level jaisi plotting. The Last Of Us jaisi adaptation. House Of The Dragon jaise characters. And well, The Witcher jaise monsters. It’s like the best of all worlds, and this is why every episode despite its longer runtime, makes you want to watch more of it. The build up to the ending of Volume 1 was quite intense and hope it gets delivered in Volume 2.
