Netflix really outdid themselves with the launch of Stranger Things and with every new season, the stories only got stranger and stranger. This supernatural saga took the world by storm, enchanting audiences worldwide with its nostalgic charm. And after a 3 year long wait, we finally have the much awaited fourth season. And guess what? All the wait, it is worth every second of it!
When the Duffer Brothers went all guns blazing in the fire-cracker scene in the shopping mall in season 3, people went- it can’t get any better than this. But brace yourselves, for the fourth season has went off the charts in terms of scale, and is backed with a storyline that will leave you on the edge of your seat! The Duffers once again weave a spellbinding narrative, combining ’80s sci-fi, horror, and introducing the most breathtaking villain of the show- VECNA. The twists and turns will keep you hooked as you eagerly anticipate what happens next.
Our beloved gang of misfits continues to grow and evolve, and the multiple new additions fit perfectly in the scheme of things. Season 4 presents captivating character development. While on one hand Eleven struggles to get back her powers, waiting to say “Maa, meri shaktiyaan aagayi maa” (Oh wait she doesn’t have a maa), Dustin’s friendship with Steve reaches new heights on the other hand as the protagonists navigate the complexities of teenage life. The writers infused a plethora of emotions throughout their journeys, and it really made it up for an entertaining first half while building the suspence for what’s to come.
“We’re a team. Friends.”
The talented cast (which isn’t justa group of kids anymore btw) shines brighter than ever! Millie Bobby Brown delivers an amazing performance as Eleven, captivating audiences with her emotional range. Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo bring depth and authenticity to their characters, making them relatable and lovable. Additionally, the new additions to the cast inject fresh energy and add intriguing dynamics to the story. But the stand out character of the season is by far Eddie Munson, portrayed by the eccentric Joseph Quinn. I mean who doesn’t love Eddie? It’s almost scary how a new character became a cult favourite for the audience in a matter of no time.
The screenplay and VFX work was top notch in this season as the team did a remarkable job in recreating the ’80s era.
Right from the fashion choices to the set designs, every aspect immerses you in a nostalgic world. The visual effects that bring the Upside Down to life are impressive, creating a chilling and visually stunning experience. The scenes involving Vecna are intricately crafted, really sending chills down your spine. The final episodes was so well directed, it kept me at the edge of the seat throughout the wild ride.
While the overall storytelling is engaging, Season 4 occasionally suffers from pacing issues. Some subplots may feel drawn out, leading to moments where the narrative loses momentum. So expecting a high octane adventure throughout the show wouldn’t be advisable, instead try enjoying each element of the show as it is. Also, with an expanded cast and various storylines, Season 4 gets worked up trying to maintain a clear focus. Certain character arcs may feel rushed, causing some narrative threads to lose impact. The show attempts to give each character their due but occasionally spreads itself too thin, resulting in a lack of cohesion.
*still crying over this moment though*
Stranger Things Season 4 is a tasty treat for the OG fans who waited years (decades) for the show’s return. Despite facing a few challenges, the show delivers an exciting and heartfelt experience that keeps viewers invested. The exceptional performances, immersive ’80s aesthetics, and the expansion of the Stranger Things universe make Season 4 a worthwhile adventure. The last few minutes of the finale sets the stage for final installment of the series, which I’m eagerly looking forward to. So grab your walkie-talkie, join the gang, and brace yourself for another exhilarating journey!
