Rahat Indori had been one of my inspiration to start writing Urdu poetry, the other being Jaun Eliya. Ever since I heard him chuckling over his own jokes at Jashn-e-Rekhta, I had been be-smitten even more by his personality, and his death feels like a personal loss. Sharing some of Rahat Indori’s best lines because the best tribute you can give to a poet is by reading him.

“Na humsafar se niklega, Na humnasheen se niklega,

Hamare paanv ka kaanta bas hum hi se niklega.”

“Log har mod pe ruk-ruk ke sambhalte kyon hai,

Itna darte hain to ghar se nikalte kyun hain.”

“Kabhi mehek ki tarah hum gulon se udte hain.

Kabhi dhue ki tarah parvaton se udte hain.

Yeh kaichiyan humein udne se khaak rokengi,

ki hum paron se nahi honslon se udte hain.”

“Do gaj hi sahi, ye meri milkiyat to hai,

Ae maut tuney mujhe zamindar kar diya.”

“Choo gaya jab kabhi khayal tera, Dil mera der tak dhadakta raha.

Kal tera zikr chid gaya tha ghar mein, Aur ghar der tak mehekta raha.”

“Aankh mein paani rakho, hothon pe chingaari rakho,

Zinda rehna hai to tarkeebein bahut saari rakho.

Ek hi nadi ke hain ye do Dostana zindagi se,

kinaare doston, maut se yaari rakho.”

“Bulaati hai magar jaane ka nai, Ye duniya hai idhar jaane ka nai.

Mere bete kisi se ishq kar, Magar hadd se guzar jaane ka nai”

Ever so ardent, Rahat ji’s poetry smelled of warmth and the feeling of a new sheet of paper that had just been opened. One of the most prominent names in the world of Urdu poetry, Rahat Ji also worked as a lyricist in the Bollywood. Witty and curtly funny, it was always fun to listen to him recite his poetry in manner that would make you think he was making it up on the spot. So natural! This exact “mizaaz” of his made me think that if he ever had to go, he would go merrily just the way he lived his life: by owning it. & he did it till the end.

” Hayaat ke anjaam par jo aapse mulakaat hogi,

Shuru hogi fir jo yahan par khatam baat hogi. “
