“Prey for the Devil” manages to defy expectations and provide an entertaining experience, even for someone like me who typically avoids exorcism-themed movies. Surprisingly, this film stands out among others in the genre. The performances are impressive, particularly the actor who portrays Father Dante, known from “13 Reasons Why.”
In an era where predictability is common, “Prey for the Devil” manages to avoid falling into that trap. The visuals are well-done and the exploration of church politics and the process of justifying an exorcism adds an interesting layer to the story. Although the plot is somewhat thin.
Horror movie turns out humourous
“Prey for the Devil” embraces it’s own ridiculousness and transforms into an unintentional comedy. The humour had me laughing throughout, reminiscent of those B movies that are so bad they become enjoyable. However, it’s true that that the movie fails to deliver genuine scares or create a truly horrifying atmosphere.
Was making the sequel a good idea?
To be honest, the movie suffers from significant flaws in both plot and character development. The storyline is disappointingly simple and the characters lack depth. It raises questions about the producers and scriptwriters’ choices, making the idea of a sequel seem unlikely.
There are numerous flaws in the movie that cannot be overlooked. For instance, a priest’s inability to pray and the display of compassion towards a demonic entity that should be condemned are among the issues. It’s almost comical to release an exorcism movie in 2022 that leans more towards comedy than horror.
While it is an enjoyable watch for those who appreciate laughably horror movies and enjoy joking around, it falls short as a genuinely scary horror flick. If you’re easily impressed or frighten easily, you might find some entertainment value in it. However, if you’re seeking a truly chilling experience, it’s best to look elsewhere.
On the negative side, it heavily promotes exorcisms and presents nuns in a negative light, which may be problematic. The plot lacks important details and the storyline lacks consistency. Comparing it to “The Exorcist” reveals a lack of understanding of what made the latter a cult classic.
My feelings about “Prey for the Devil” are mixed. While there are many aspects to appreciate, I can’t help but desire more. The plot twist, while enjoyable, lacks surprise and the climax feels rushed and unsatisfying. It’s worth watching for fans of exorcism movies, but it falls short in fully developing the story and providing a truly captivating narrative.
