First of all, y’all should appreciate me for the kind of risk I’m taking, taking on a really hot and debated topic in the world. The show is loved around the world but we hear a fair amount of disapproval for it too and I’m here to put my points here in favour for Friends. So if you feel like dropping some nasty comments in my DM or debating it some more, feel free to. I don’t have a life outside of the internet anyway.

I’m gonna be straight up with you, I watched Friends for the first time during this lockdown. And I was surprised at the kind of things people used to say before I watched it which also had kinda put me off.

“Bro lame hai”

“It’s very overrated, kaafi normie”

“The laugh tracks are cringy af”

Um? I didn’t feel any of that. I’ve watched a fairly good number of movies, TV shows and anime to say this: The taste of art is subjective. Two people might not like the same thing and that doesn’t make the thing lame in its entirety, Stop bending under

And while I was watching Friends, I really began to dig the vibe. I mean, there’s enough toxicity in the world and tbh, I don’t always want to see murder, explosion or the REALITY in TV shows too. Nahi karna yaar brain use, Friends is an escape from all of that where you can just lay back with a bowl of Maggi, forget the shitty day you were having and watch Joey doing stupid harkat, Phoebe being a total weirdo, Monica being the mom friend, Chandler bing.. well, Chandler. Point is, I know it’s no masterpiece, but it brings a different level of comfort just watching Friends having a pretty normal day, devoid of toxicity and that’s why people love it so much and you don’t need to shit on it by your moo point.

More than anything, it’s an ICONIC experience! How often do you find a show that almost everybody has watched? you make a reference and you can be 99% sure the other person will get it. I got to it a little late but I know for a fact that it was the gateway sitcom for almost everyone in India, a show that introduced you to the world of pop culture in your late teens. So many memes, reaction gifs, references. That’s why it’s considered so iconic. An experience we all share.

And I think just because it’s famous and everybody has discovered it, doesn’t mean it has lost its value and you start calling it overrated 🙂

“The laugh tracks are lame bro”

So, the show aired for the first time in 1994 and I bet most of you weren’t even born then. So it’s no big deal if the show followed the narrative in a O fashion that’s not common to Gen-Zs. In fact, laugh tracks were used in a fairly large number of shows in the last decade of the previous century and it was perfectly fine for that time. A sitcom is where the whole episode is shot in 1-2 locations so there’s not much space for movement thus, verbal humor was the norm and laugh tracks were used to fill in for the background score.

The main characters of Friends are one of the most recognisable characters in the history of television shows. Why? the character design is bloody amazing. Each character has such a distinctive personality that the personality becomes synonymous with the character. No wonder Chandler is the most used icon for sarcasm in the meme world. The distinctive features of different characters is what made the narrative of Friends truly amazing!

Actually, the show really establishes friendship on a level that is desirable. Understandably, we all have had our part in shitty bonds and friendships and Friends just makes you wish you had people you can talk to about your day and people who are gonna be there for you. And it’s not too late to find people like that We’re just so fixated on the ideal friendships that we keep losing our best options: people as clumsy and messed up as us, who don’t need to be perfect as long as they stay and that’s the only kind of friendship that we need. That’s why it connects on a level like no other show does.

A lot of modern day jokes and trolling among millennial is based on the kind of humour the writers used in the show. The legacy built around it is not a farce and the sheer number of viewership is proof enough. A lot of criticism among people is based on the feel-good nature of the show. Personally I don’t believe the mood of a screenplay is a criteria for judgement.

SOMBRE AND SERIOUS TONE OF PLOT IS NOT THE ONLY TESTIMONY FOR A GOOD SHOW. READ IT AGAIN. I love Breaking Bad & Mr. Robot just as much as I love Friends.
