Wake your besties up cuz another banger of a horror movie has dropped! Evil Dead Rise is back with vengeance, hungry to drown you in a lift full of blood till you’re down gasping for air. Director Lee Cronin’s wicked mind takes us on a wild ride, ditching the old cabin-in-the-woods cliché, as it’s time for a crumbling apartment in the heart of Los Angeles to go for the toss. While it may lack the depth and claustrophobic suspense of its predecessors, Evil Dead Rise is here to unleash a whole new level of blood-soaked madness that’ll have you screaming with equal parts terror and delight.
Watcher beware, for the blood and gore do not care
Cronin really went ‘Fine, I’ll do it myself’ and unleashed his wicked imagination, drenching the screen with carnage and gore ultra pro max. Let me warn you pehle se that this movie is gory to the extent that you may wanna leave the theatres. Eye-popping moments and limb-separating sequences ko digest karne wale khatron ke khiladi hi ye movie dekhne jaye pls. The icing on the cake is the special effects, which make the scenes even more believable. The top-notch prosthetics and gruesome set pieces make you go ‘Mereko toh aisa dhak dhak horela hai’, wrenching your gut inside out (pls side wale pe puke mat kar dena). My only complaint is- the horror factor isn’t up to the mark. The film leaves you more disgusted than horrified tbh.
Daastan ye hai ki Ellie and her three children along with her sister, realize they are treated in a demon party after an earthquake uncovers a 100 saal purana bhootiya bank with its gehre raaz buried beneath their building. Bass phir kya, is a survival game for the family and the neighbors which feels like a horrible dream. Alyssa Sutherland really gives your the chills, standing out as Ellie. The sudden change up between her ‘pyaari maa’ persona and the meat-eating stree within her sets up an air of unpredictability, making you squinch your eyes and waiting for the next move. The rest of the cast including the bachha party also do a pretty good job of maintaining the darr ka mahaul throughout the movie.
Full marks for terror, but the story misses its mark when it comes to depth
While Evil Dead Rise successfully delivers the gruesome spectacle that fans crave, it ain’t exactly an intellectual masterpiece. The initial five minutes feel confusing as they straightaway get into the action, without any backstory. The earthquake and the history of the cursed bank too could have been finger-licking aspects, but the makers miss out on those. Although it’s a horror movie so utna fark nahi padta, but it does lack depth. However, once this unholy train gets rolling, it’s a non-stop ride of blood-soaked terror that’ll have you keeping your popcorn aside. Just when you think you can’t handle any more gruesome goodness, the film cranks it up another notch, sending you into a delightful frenzy of screams and laughter.
The crisp runtime keeps your heart racing throughout, but a few breaks along the way would be appreciated
With a runtime of 96 minutes, Evil Dead Rise never gives you a break in its delivery of blood-soaked horror. The film’s intense camerawork and well-executed horrific moments add chaar chaand to its disturbingly immersive atmosphere, keeping you at the edge of your seat right till the end. However, the relentless gore could have been balanced with small Kit-Kat breaks, giving us time to breathe amidst the blood-spattering action. As Aakash Gupta said- ‘Saans toh lene de bey!’
Evil Dead Rise proves that Lee Cronin is a horror director to look out for, injecting new life (and death) into hum sabka beloved nightmare-inducing franchise. While it might not reach the heart-stopping terror of its predecessors, it delivers on its promises of an over-the-top splatterfest from the word go. With outstanding practical effects, convincing performances, and unapologetic levels of gore, this film is a wickedly fun and candid addition to the Evil Dead saga. So grab your chainsaw and get ready with your friends, because Evil Dead Rise is here to party, and it’s not taking prisoners!
