People haven’t even yet recovered from Aditya Seal’s comparison of Student of the Year 2 with Marvel’s Avengers: End Game, here we have Indian big shot producer Ekta Kapoor comparing HBO’s Game of Thrones with Indian fantasy show ‘Naagin’ that recently finished its season 3.
Ekta Kapoor thinks they are a lot of common factors between both the shows, like, the existence of mythological characters like Dragons in GoT, and ichhadhari naagin in Naagin.
However, unlike Game of Thrones, Naagin gets a lot of sticks on the internet. There are so many viral memes going around mocking the show. Getting back at the hate, she said it’s “anti-populist” that people find dragons cool in GoT, and not naagins in indian shows.
In a conversation with Times of India, she said, “what are the big shows that are working internationally, currently? People are watching dragons. It is uber cool for them to watch dragons, but when India watches naagins, it is not cool. Isn’t this anti-populist? Why do we look down on the masses and their choices?”
She further took a dig at Jon Snow coming back from the dead. “Didn’t Jon Snow return from the dead? If you are not the audience, you will criticise, but then, that’s ringside play. Data proves that people are watching these shows because every time there is a kidnap, murder or a hero returns from the dead, there is a surge in ratings. It is an escapism for the Indian audience.”
Naagin makers also try to keep up with global pop culture. Recently, they had even created an Endgame like poster to promote the 3rd season of Naagin.
