Wake up babez, a new Shahid Kapoor alpha male movie dropped! Bloody Daddy is a trippy joyride through the dark underbelly of Gurugram (more like Abu Dhabi) where drug lords, corrupt cops, and a duffel bag filled with cocaine sets the stage for chaos. Remember the achhe insaan bure insaan analogy in My Name Is Khan? Well, that goes for a toss in the dustbin as the movie goes bonkers from start to finish. However, seeing Ali Abbas Zafar ace the action genre had me hyped up real bad for this movie. Sadly, it does not live up to his standards. And I don’t deny the movie ain’t entertaining, but you don’t really feel satisfied by the end of it.
Plot
Things get fcked up when Sumair (Shahid Kapoor), an NCB Officer and his sidekick Jaggi (Zeishan Quadri) crash a drug deal and piss off the notorious drug lord Sikandar (Ronit Roy). Sikandar goes crazy and hisaab barabar karne ke liye kidnaps Sumair’s son Atharva and demands a fair exchange- cocaine dedo, beta lelo (Hum Aapke Hai Koun vibes). Since then, it’s a race against time as Sumair goes ‘Wana Wao Wao’ as he battles corrupt colleagues and navigates through a maze of danger to save his son.
Performances
After Shahid Kapoor‘s recent roles, it feels rather unreal ki he was this cutu chocolate boy of Bollywood once upon a time. His wild, kickass side in this movie gives you Kabir Singh X John Wick vibes that absolutely blows you out. Nothing compels you to stick to the movie more than his on-screen rizz. Ronit Roy and Rajeev Khandelwal bring out their best and set the dramatic tone of the movie. They are the only ones after Shahid, who actually compel you to sit up straight and wait for their next move. However, Sanjay Kapoor and Diana Penty are the real bummers. They are pretty much of no value to the movie, thanks to meh writing and poor performances.
Screenplay
One major issue I had with the movie was its pacing. It feels all ??? cuz first half mein action hi gayab hai. Second half mein action toh hai but it’s so weirdly edited that you dont get the adrenaline pumps (‘I have two sides’ meme enters the chat). The chemistry between Sumair and his son Atharva lacks a genuine touch, prolly because Atharva is such a douchebag. While Ronit Roy has a strong presence, his intense moments don’t have the ‘dhak dhak horela hai’ impact and you keep having the ‘haan haan sab theek hojayega end mein’ feeling. Overall, the screenplay lacks the intensity for you to take the movie seriously. Wasted potential imo.
Writing
The biggest red flag of this movie is its predictability. I mean, for an action thriller, you expect things to be a mystery till the end right? But the movie lacks that Abbas-Mastaan touch as you know who is on the good side and who is not by the first thirty minutes. Set during the second wave, the movie smartly uses Covid references, adding ek chutki chuckle between the chaos in the hotel. However, some of the supporting characters are poorly written and lack purpose. Sanjay Kapoor’s serious dialogues are unintentionally funny and Shahid’s maniacal side also seems over-the-top at some moments.
In a nutshell, Bloody Daddy is a guilty pleasure that delivers on its promise of entertainment, but also leaves you with the ‘thanda chor diya’ feeling. Shahid Kapoor’s electrifying performance, the stylized action, and the crazy plot make it a good watch. But don’t expect it to be an out of the box surprise. Ali Abbas Zafar misses the mark with this one, but still does well enough to keep it entertaining.
