What starts of as a laugh out loud comedy, soon turns to be an emotional movie, delivering a serious message while seeking acceptance from the audience. This is the shortest possible way for me to describe Badhaai Do. Directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni and featuring the dynamic duo of Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar, this movie takes a humorous and heartfelt dive into the world of same-sex relationships. The movie, despite its stumbles does a great job at discussing the ‘taboo’ of the LGBT community.
Rajkummar Rao as Shardul, a ‘macho’ police officer and Bhumi Pednekar as Sumi, a Physical Eduction teacher, are a riot in Badhaai Do, showcasing their impeccable comedic timing and chemistry. They effortlessly deliver hilarious moments and leave the audience in splits, proving once again why they are among the finest actors in Bollywood. Chum Darang as Rimjhim is a blast of surprise for many, as she makes a fine debut in Bollywood with a role that takes courage for a newcomer to go along with.
Badhaai Do fearlessly tackles societal taboos, particularly same-sex relationships, with charm and wit. It breaks down stereotypes and challenges societal norms, encouraging audiences to embrace acceptance and celebrate love in all its forms. While the first half is all fun and laughs, the second half of the movie is the real deal. It beautifully captures the profound loneliness and isolation experienced by individuals in the LGBTQ+ community, particularly when they lack a supportive environment to openly express themselves, just because ‘naak kat jayegi aur naam kharab hojayega.’
“Hamara Majak Gharwalon Ne Nahin Kismat Ne Banaya Hai”
Beyond the laughter, Badhaai Do delves into the complexities of societal expectations and the importance of being true to oneself. It serves as a reminder to question the ‘log kya kahenge ka baggage’ and highlights the power of acceptance and understanding. Badhaai Do is perfectly balanced, as all things should be. It strikes a commendable balance between comedy and emotional depth. Seamless transitions from side-splitting laughter to heartfelt moments tugs at the heartstrings of the audience and creating a memorable viewing experience.
“Family Hamare Life Ka Hissa Hai, Puri Life To Nahi”
While the writing is kaafi badhiya, it does lack in some aspects. The second half of the movie feels rushed in some parts and as a result it makes it difficult for people to emtionally connect with the scenes. Some scenes that aim to be lighthearted can feel forced, disrupting the overall flow of the film. A few instances also end up hurting the sentiments of the very community it is trying to back, but I suppose they are honest mistakes while trying to figure out how to go about the topic. But, what’s true is that Badhaai Do is a wonderful movie, and a step closer to a more inclusive society, where we don’t have to wear masks to celebrate love.
So the movie delivers a fun and candid viewing experience while fearlessly addresses societal taboos and provokes thought on important issues. It is worth watching for the outstanding performances and its ability to spark conversations on acceptance and inclusion. So, grab your popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the laughter and emotions that Badhaai Do brings to the table.
