BCCI has selected Sachin Tendulkar’s son Arjun Tendulkar for India under-19 squad which will play against Sri Lanka in July. Indian U-19 team will tour Sri Lanka for 4 ODIs and 2 test matches starting from July to August. However, Arjun has only been selected for the two four-day test matches.
“We are happy on Arjun being selected in Indian under 19 team. It is an important milestone in his cricketing life. Anjali and I will always support Arjun in his choices and pray for his success,” said Sachin Tendulkar on his selection.
However, selection of 18 year old all-rounder who bowls and bats left-handed, Arjun Tendlukar has sparked off the nepotism debate on Twitter again.
While some people are empathizing with Arjun Tendulkar saying he has to deal with a lot of pressure as he takes baby steps towards the Indian team.
others are just wondering whether his selection is a result of his talent or his father’s influence. People are also bringing up with examples of Sunil Gavaskar and Abhishek Bachchan to back the nepotism angle.
Well, it’s still way too early to make up our minds about it. Let’s see him perform under Rahul Dravid’s coaching and we’ll know for sure. I don’t think nepotism can exist in Cricket as it does in Bollywood. He might get an edge in getting more opportunities, but he can’t sustain if doesn’t perform. Meanwhile, he has a ton of pressure to deal with. Good luck to him!
