‘Tis time for us to enjoy the Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 duo back on the screen again! A complete package of love, laughter, and a whole lot of Gujarati goodness, Satyaprem Ki Katha is that one refreshing watch I was yearning for so long. This popcorn-worthy film, directed by Sameer Vidwans, takes you on a delightful journey that goes beyond the typical monotonous movies we get in the name of romcoms. Balancing the over-the-top grandness with an important message, this movie is your perfect weekend watch with your family!

Kartik Aaryan is back playing another relatable, fun, and quirky boy-next-door, this time as Sattu aka Satyaprem. At this point, usko patent hi dedo is role ki. Sattu is a lovable loser with a heart of gold (sounds like me). My guy has been failing law exams for three years, does not have a job, and on top of that, is prey to the daily taane of his ‘maa-behen’. But aisi haalat mein bhi Sattu’s infectious smile never wavers, and he remains determined to win the heart of the beautiful Katha, played by the talented Kiara Advani, an aspiring singer from an affluent Gujarati family. Yaha se, it is a story of how Sattu tries to win over Katha, who, in her own world is dealing with issues she can’t speak about.

The best part about this rom-com is that it dares to spread its wings, which is vvvery rare aaj kal. There is a fun, yet careful approach in the way it tackles social issues and discusses serious topics. It blends raw emotions with a maturely crafted social message, which is why it never really feels all preachy.

The cast understands the assignment perfectly, but it is Kiara who tops the table

Kartik Aaryan has developed this niche of playing the lovable boy-next-door roles. And honestly, he does it quite convincingly. Even though his Gujarati accent is all over the place, he makes up for it with his naive nature and spot-on comic timing, ensuring a goofy presence. But it is Kiara Advani who steals the show as Katha. The number of emotions she displays in this movie is more than the mood swings I get in a day. Probably the most convincing actor currently when it comes to serious roles, she beautifully captures the character’s unspoken emotions and adds depth to the story. There is this uncertainty about Katha at the back of your mind throughout the movie, and it is Kiara who makes sure you never forget that question.

The supporting cast is just a bag full of OGs but is limited by smaller but impactful roles. Gajraj Rao brings an unknown intense side to his character, which makes for a fresh surprise. Supriya Pathak is limited by the script but plays her part well, especially the ones with Kartik. The biggest bummer though is Rajpal Yadav’s wasted cameo for a stand-out laugh zone. It’s sad to see how hum sabke peak comedy MVP is underutilized these days.

The film, although termed a ‘Musical Blockbuster’, has a mixed bag of songs

There is no doubt that the film’s music blends seamlessly with the narrative. However, the bangers you’d expect from a Bollywood musical are missing. The upbeat songs are jammable, but they won’t make it to your Spotify playlists or Insta stories (ab toh notes bhi). The more serious ones though, are exceptional, with ‘Aaj Ke Baad’ and ‘Naseeb Se’ standing out for me. Do not get me started on the Pasoori remake, just do not. Kya zaroorat thi? Kya majboori thi? We will never know.

In conclusion, Satyaprem Ki Katha is one love story Bollywood desperately needed for a fresh change. It is your heartwarming but thought-provoking film that explores love, societal expectations, and self-discovery. Despite a few pacing issues, the film never bores you and gives you food for thought. You get entertained, you get some preachy stuff. Equally balanced, as all things should be. So grab your loved ones, enjoy the film, and remember, “sach bolne se pehle sochna kya”!

Good Stuff Stellar performance from the entire star cast ensures you can relate to them Efficiently balances comedy and drama, providing a complete package of emotions
Bad Stuff Never forgiving them for Pasoori Nu, even the other songs are meh The screenplay gets repetitive at times, which might get tiring for the audience The first half might feel stretchy, but the second half picks the pace
Summary
A wholesome movie that has more than just romance and dance numbers. Go for a watch and you won't be disappointed!
