Looop Lapeta, is a Bollywood thriller drama directed by Aakash Bhatia and is based on the famous German Classic ‘Run Lola Run’. While it garnered attention with its intriguing plot and star-studded cast, the movie lost its charm because of poor technical execution, with fans of the sci-fi genre calling it a wasted opportunity.
The film revolves around Savi, played by Taapsee Pannu, a woman caught in a time loop on the day she has to save the life of his boyfriend Satya, played by Tahir Raj Bhasin. Inspired by Run Lola Run, Looop Lapeta attempts to inject a unique twist into the narrative, blending comedy, romance, and suspense. While the concept holds potential, the film struggles to capitalize on it.
Taapsee Pannu delivers a commendable performance as Savi, effectively portraying the character’s desperation and determination. Tahir Raj Bhasin‘s portrayal of Satya is decent but lacks chemistry with Pannu, diminishing the impact of their love story. Supporting actors including Zeeshan Ayyub and Rajpal Yadav provide moments of humor, but their characters remain extremely under-utlized and underdeveloped. The makers focus too much on the complicated plot, thus leaving behind the heart of the story, the characters.
This sci-fi venture gets stuck in its own time loop
The screenplay suffers from inconsistency and a lack of cohesiveness. The time loop concept, initially intriguing, eventually becomes a bit too repetitive for its own good, making it difficult to sustain engagement. The film’s pacing is particularly slow in the first half, hampering emotional investment. The narrative loses steam, and at times, it feels like we’re going in circles—literally! The film takes a little too long to find its groove, leaving us waiting for the story to kick into high gear. Director Aakash Bhatia’s ambitious vision falls short in execution. There are moments when the film struggles to find its identity, bouncing between comedy and drama without quite nailing the balance. Moments that should be intense or emotionally charged often miss the mark, leaving the audience detached.
The commendable cinematography is not enough to make up for the poor editing and narration
Looop Lapeta’s technical aspects provide a mixed bag. The cinematography, especially during the time loop sequences, is visually appealing and adds dynamism. The music, composed by various artists, lacks memorable tracks. Even the BGM lacks the intensity for the thriller this movie is. The editing too, stumbles at times. Transitions between the time loop sequences and the present day are not seamless, leading to confusion and a disjointed viewing experience. This is what disconnected the audience from the movie the most imo.
The movie had the potential to be a captivating and innovative film in Bollywood. While the performances are commendable, they are not enough to make up for a poorly executed screenplay and inconsistent direction. The film offers sporadic humor and visually appealing cinematography but falls short of delivering a truly memorable experience. For viewers who appreciate experimental storytelling and can overlook the film’s shortcomings, Looop Lapeta may be worth a watch. However, those seeking a cohesive narrative and a fulfilling cinematic experience might find themselves disappointed. It is sad to see Looop Lapeta to end up as a wasted opportunity.
