It’s been 19 years since Dil Chahta Hai release 19 years ago and here is why it is till such an ICONIC film.

I was merely 6 yo when the movie got released. I don’t think most of us (late 90s & post 2000’s kids) understood the movie when we watched it for the first time. But it hits different when you watch it as an adult and realize the layers & the actual theme of the film. And you’re all “wtf why didn’t I watch it before?” I recently watched it again after a really long time and realized a few things!

Made in 2001, this movie was WAYYYYYYYYYY ahead of its time. Be it the songs, characters, theme, story or the way it’s shot. No, really, it introduced a new style of filmmaking in Bollywood. And when people were crushing and romanticizing over Sharukh-Kajol kinda overtly dramatic romance, there came Farhan Akhtar, telling a story of 3 guys friends. Just like that. No violins, no khet, no dramatic family fights. Just the 3 of them chillin’ and figuring shit out… bas.

It came out YEARS ago but it’s still very relatable and relevant for the most of us. I mean, I still jam to Koi Kahe and Woh Ladki Hai Kahan?? and all of us have an Akash, a Sameer and a Sid in our lives. I bet you do too (if not, sorry laxman) Mature aur sensible baate karne ke liye you have a Sameer, Bakchodi pelne ke liye you have Sid and thoda show off karne ke liye you have Akash. And lucky you if you have all 3 in just one person.

Also this fish scene is my earliest memory of this film. My chhotu sa brain was ???????? lol. We have already to pull it off at home.

I really love how honestly they portrayed group friendship. It’s not all fun & games, it’s not all rosy where everyone loves everyone. It is flawed. There are fights, differences in opinions & arguments. It sometimes gets messy and absurd and you wanna stab each other with a pencil. We lose friendships. This is not a Jai-Veeru kinda world. But isn’t that real in actual life as well? How many times have you fought with your friend and came back stronger? Yeah, me too.

This movie is the reason why literally everyone in our generation has “road trip to Goa w friends” on their bucket list. It’s so iconic that Goa with friends has become an important milestone in our friendship. The references, the jokes. To think this movie has played a huge role in Goa tourism is INSANE. Aur ab har Goa trip ki playlist me sabse pehla gana isi movie ka hota hai and out of 1500 photos that You click, one of them is you and your guy friends posing on the Chapora fort – commonly known as “Wahi jagah jaha DCH ka wo wala scene hai”

Dil Chahta Hai is to Goa what YJHD is to Manali and ZNMD is to Spain.

It’s okay to fall in love with anyone irrespective of what people (read: friends) think of them. Ab feelings hai to hai. Feelings ka mazak nhi udane ka… Most of the guy friendships are perceived to be very insensitive and *toxic* in a way where you don’t prefer to express yourself freely to your friends in the fear of being tagged as “uncool”. Yeah, in that case, be a Sameer and not Akash.

Oh, and the music. Oof. The OG Shankar Ehsaan Loy created MAGIC of an album which we literally STILL jam to after all these years?!?! what a beaut. You have a song for every fucking mood. You can party to “Koi kahe”, cry to sleep to “Tanhai”, go on a road trip with your friends on “Dil chahta hai”, feel complete with “Kaisi ye rut hai” and prolly look for the love of your life with “woh ladki hai kaha” as your background score. And wonder why the fuck you’re doing that with “Jaane Kyun”

No, really. The music is legendary. Koi Kahe gives you an INSTANT dopamine rush and sometimes all you need to hear are those “bigade duniya, bigad ne bhi do” lines. And you CANNOT listen to Woh Ladki Hai Kahan without doing the bird flying dance step and playing violin with your mouth (yeah, shut up know everyone does that) SO ICONIC.

And that “haan mai…magar wo … suno to… tumne to… lekin mai… kabse keh..” BEST BREAKUP EVER. PERIOD

Here’s to Dil Chahta Hai, the movie that changed the course of Bollywood films and gave our generation the “Goa plan” which gets cancelled anyway, but STILL.

Yeh ZNMD, YJHD and Rock On are all cool and all but hello, a legend remains a legend.

(oooOHooooooHooooooOO, OoooHoohohooooho)
